IT IS the image that has shocked the world.A Turkish police officer carrying the tiny, lifeless body of a Syrian refugee who drowned after the boat he was in sank off Turkey’s coast.
The toddler, Aylan Kurdi, was just three years old. His mother and Aylan’s four-year-old brother Ghaleb also drowned as the children’s father tried for three desperate hours to keep their heads above water after their asylum seeker boat capsized en route to Greece.
“My children slipped through my hands. It was dark and everyone was screaming,” a shattered Abdullah Kurdi recalled after watching his whole family die in front of him. He reportedly paid $US2000 to people smugglers for the fatal crossing.
For the past 24 hours this distressing photo has sparked horrific reaction around the world and brought home the reality of Europe’s refugee crisis.
And when The Project began discussing the distressing photo, it became all too much for host Carrie Bickmore.
The mother of two’s voice began to crack and her eyes welled up as the image of the toddler flashed across the screen.
“I just can’t look at that without being so upset. It just makes me think about how lucky, lucky I am that I live in Australia, that my children live in Australia. That’s what it is,” Bickmore said regaining her composure.
“That’s the thing about it,” co-host Waleed Aly replied. “It’s so easy to hear headlines from Syria and move on. I think that’s so easy.”
